Keys to Democracy

We're excited to hold our 8th annual Keys to Democracy Awards Dinner on Thursday, May 23rd, 6:15pm, at Tashua Knolls Banquet Hall. Our awards dinner is a great opportunity to support the ongoing work of the TDTC to elect Democrats whose mission it is to improve the lives of the people of Trumbull and in the state of Connecticut.

This year, we are honored to remember our friend Andy Palo for his years of selfless dedication to the Town of Trumbull, including serving on the Board of Education, the Board of Finance, the Water Pollution Control Authority and countless other acts of less visible, but equally valued volunteerism. Andy was taken from his family and  his friends much too soon in 2023, but his generosity, gentle spirit, and warm sense of humor enriched our town and all who had the privilege of knowing him and serving with him.

As we do each year, we also remember and honor the memory of Kevin Sutherland’s democratic ideals and commitment to action through the presentation of the Kevin J. Sutherland Inspiration in Democracy Award. This year’s recipient is Carla Volpe who stepped up in 2020 to challenge the incumbent Republican in the 134th House district – a district that represents parts of Fairfield and Trumbull, a seat not held by a Democrat in over a decade. With little political experience, Carla came within 4 points of winning the election. Two years later, Carla stepped up to run the campaign for another political newcomer, Sarah Keitt, in the same 134th district. With Carla’s guidance and Sarah’s hard work, this time, the Democrats took the seat by 10 votes! Carla went on to lead local campaigns in Monroe and Easton. For her team spirit, determination, and support of Democratic values, we are proud to recognize Carla’s hard work following in Kevin Sutherland’s footsteps.

The TDTC’s Keys to Democracy event celebrates the founding American ideal that our government derives its power from We the People. Every citizen across our town, state, and country directs that power each time they come out to vote. As Democrats, we encourage participation in the civic life of our nation because it is that participation that hold the keys to our democracy and guarantees that the ideals set down by our Founding Fathers will be preserved and passed on to the next generation. Democracy is on the ballot in November. The 2024 national election is perhaps the most important election in our lifetime and it is especially important that this year, we motivate our friends and neighbors to use the power of their vote like never before so America can continue the progress made by those who came before.

We hope you will join us on May 23rd for the 8th Annual Keys to Democracy!

TDTC Gathering / Unofficial Meeting

Just a quick update regarding our next scheduled Trumbull DTC meeting. Originally, we had it slated for Tuesday, April 23rd. However, given that it coincides with Passover, we've decided not to hold an official meeting.

Instead, we're planning to gather informally at the library in the community room from 6:30 to 7:15. During this time, we'll be writing and labeling postcards to new voters. It's also an excellent opportunity to meet with officers and district leaders and discuss any pertinent matters.

Looking forward to seeing you all there. As always, reach out with any questions.
